Solucaps mazindol 2mg is a tricyclic anorexigenic agent that is unrelated to and less toxic than [amphetamine], but with some similar side effects. It inhibits uptake of catecholamines and blocks the binding of cocaine to the dopamine uptake transporter. Mazindol is also approved in the United States for the treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Generic name: Mazindol.
Pharmaceutical form and formulation: Extended release capsules. Each capsule contains: mazindol 2 mg.
Excipient cbp. 1 capsule.
Therapeutic indications: Anorexigenic. So indicated as an aid in the treatment of exogenous obesity.
Manufactured in Mexico under the following brands and presentations:
  • Tablets of 0.5, 1 or 2 mg of Mazindol in boxes with 7, 15, 30 and 60 tablets. They are produced by Darier laboratories, Pharmaceutical Research and also Medix Products under the trade names Diestet, Ifa Lose and MZ1 respectively.
  • Mazindol 2 mg capsules in boxes containing 30 capsules. They are made by Productos Medix laboratories under the name Solucaps.

Contraindications and Warnings

  • General : Not recommended in case of heart disease or high blood pressure . Those with joint and eye problems should avoid using mazindol. Use caution around people who have thyroid problems, seizures, and diabetes . Great care must be taken when driving vehicles or machinery. Do not use in children under 12 years of age or in the elderly.
  • Allergies : Avoid using Mazindol if you have an allergy to the compound.
  • Mix with Alcohol: Do not consume alcohol during treatment with Mazindol as it increases the risk of side effects.
  • Mix with other medications: Do not take together with guanethidine since Mazindol reduces its effect, causing an increase in blood pressure. Medicines such as amitriptyline , amoxapine, doxepin, nortriptyline, imipramine , clomipramine , nortriptyline, and desipramine decrease the effect of Mazindol.

Mazindol side effects

If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking mazindol and seek emergency medical attention:
  • an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives);
  • an irregular heartbeat or very high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision); or
  • hallucinations, abnormal behavior, or confusion.
Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take mazindol and also talk to your doctor if you experience
  • restlessness or tremor,
  • nervousness or anxiety,
  • headache or dizziness,
  • insomnia,
  • dry mouth or an unpleasant taste in your mouth,
  • diarrhea or constipation, or
  • impotence or changes in your sex drive.
So Mazindol is habit forming. You can become physically and psychologically dependent on this medication, and also withdrawal effects may occur if you stop taking it suddenly after several weeks of continuous use. Most importantly Talk to your doctor about stopping this medication gradually.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
